Don't let the kids read this
by Doreen Cudnik
In a recent issue of the Lakewood Sun Post, staff writer Julie Sowa did an interesting piece on the growing coffeehouse phenomenon in Cleveland. However, I nearly choked on my cappuccino when I read the paragraph on the Red Star Cafe at 11604 Detroit Ave. Sowa writes, "Speaking of reading materials, the Red Star does feature the usual coffee house assortment of alternative publications, and more so-appealing to all sexual preferences. Maybe you should leave the kids at homeor do carry out."
Say what? When I contacted Sowa to get a clarification, she assured me she was not referring to the Gay People's Chronicle, which is distributed at the Red Star, but to the "magazines with heavy S/M content and violence--mainly comic books." Sowa told me that she had two sons, ages 12 and 14, "and I wouldn't want them reading this material."
All of this came as a big surprise to Red Star owner John C. Cook. "We don't carry any magazines with S/M content," Cook told me. In a letter to the Lakewood Sun Post, Cook said, "The Sun papers should consider that this community is diverse and has a variety of interests and values. By attempting to steer your readers away from us for accommodating them needlessly injures our business and is a disservice to your readers."
Maybe Sowa and the editors at the Lakewood Sun Post should look at figures regarding the size of the gay, lesbian and bisexual population in the community in which they publish, and not insult their readers' intelligence by suggesting that publications that cater to a gay audience are somehow harmful to children.
Fine art photographer and AIDS activist Jeff Palmer is again looking for men who would like to contribute their time and image to raise funds for people living with AIDS and HIV by posing for the 1996 AIDS Benefit Calendar. The AIDS Benefit Calendar features fourteen black and white photographic images of male nudes including im-
ages of two men together in tender and artistic poses.
Since 1990, the AIDS Benefit Calendar has contributed more than $230,000 to direct-service AIDS agencies in twenty cities. The message of the 1996 AIDS Benefit Calendar remains the same as it has been since the first calendar in 1990, with its call to action: "Focus On A Future Without AIDS. A call for caring people everywhere to mobilize the energy, goodwill, resources and generosity necessary in the fight to stop AIDS."
To be con-
sidered for the 1996 AIDS Benefit Calendar, please send a recent photograph showing face and physique to: Calendar Model Search Committee, Dept. KW, P.O. Box 34012, San Diego, CA 92163.
Congratulations to Dr. Dee Mosbacher and Frances Reid of Woman Vision Productions. They may soon find out how much an Oscar statuette really weighs. Their film Straight From The Heart has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Short Documentary Film category. The film was developed and produced in response to the radical Right's The Gay Agenda film series.
Straight from the Heart profiles parents who have come to a new understanding of their gay and lesbian children, and who now courageously wish to share their stories. "The Academy Award nomination and ensuing publicity will help spread the word about Straight from the Heart and carry our message to those who most need it," said coproducer Mosbacher. "It offers us a unique opportunity to talk about our lives, rather than be talked about by our opponents. We hope the simple truth will be a powerful opponent to the lies and propaganda that characterize the anti-gay videos."
